Acts 15:20

Listen to this article

“But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.”

Context:Acts 15 records the Council of Jerusalem, an important gathering of early Christian leaders to discuss the issue of whether Gentile believers needed to follow the Mosaic law, particularly in regards to circumcision. Some Jewish believers argued that Gentiles had to be circumcised and keep the law, while others, like Paul and Barnabas, emphasized the grace of Jesus Christ and His work on the cross as the basis for salvation. The council sought to address this controversy and establish a unified position.

Study:

Abstaining from pollutions of idols:In the Greco-Roman world, idol worship was prevalent, and many sacrifices were made to pagan gods. The council recognized the danger of idolatry and its association with demonic influences. Believers were encouraged to refrain from participating in idolatrous practices and rituals. This instruction emphasizes the exclusive worship of the one true God and the need to avoid any form of spiritual contamination.

Abstaining from fornication:Fornication refers to any sexual activity outside the bounds of marriage. The council affirmed the biblical teaching that sexual purity is essential for believers. God’s design for sexual intimacy is within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. This instruction calls for believers to live lives that honor God and reflect His character in their relationships and conduct.

Abstaining from things strangled and from blood:These instructions relate to dietary practices. The consumption of meat from animals that had been strangled was often associated with pagan religious rituals. The prohibition against consuming blood goes back to the Old Testament, where the life of an animal was seen as residing in its blood. The council sought to avoid unnecessary offense or stumbling blocks for Jewish believers by recommending that Gentile believers abstain from these practices.

Application:

  • The Council of Jerusalem demonstrates the early Church’s commitment to unity and addressing disputes through dialogue and prayer. It encourages believers today to seek unity within the Church and handle disagreements with grace and humility.
  • The instructions given in Acts 15:20 highlight the importance of maintaining purity in our worship, relationships, and conduct. Believers are called to live separate lives, free from the defilement of idolatry and sexual immorality.
  • The dietary instructions remind us to be sensitive to the cultural context and the potential impact our actions may have on others. While the specific dietary restrictions may not apply directly to us today, the principle of considering others and avoiding unnecessary offense remains relevant.
  • Acts 15:20 should prompt us to examine our own lives and ensure that we are living in accordance with God’s standards. It reminds us of the importance of personal holiness and obedience to God’s Word.

Remember, Bible study is an ongoing process, and it is beneficial to explore the surrounding verses and seek additional insights from trusted commentaries or pastors.
