Acts 16:4

Listen to this article

“And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.”

Context:Acts 16 provides an account of the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul and his companions. In this particular verse, Paul, Silas, and Timothy are traveling through various cities, delivering the decrees or decisions made by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem.

Historical Background:– The early Christian community faced challenges regarding the inclusion of Gentile believers. The question of whether Gentile converts needed to observe Jewish customs and practices was a significant issue.

– To address this matter, the apostles and elders in Jerusalem convened the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) to deliberate and make decisions regarding the requirements for Gentile believers.

– The council concluded that Gentile believers were not required to be circumcised or follow the Law of Moses but were encouraged to abstain from certain practices associated with idolatry, sexual immorality, and eating meat sacrificed to idols (Acts 15:19-20).

Delivery of the Decrees:– As Paul and his companions traveled to different cities, they carried with them the decrees or decisions that were made by the Jerusalem Council.

– The purpose of delivering these decrees was to ensure that the Gentile believers in those cities were aware of the council’s decisions and understood the guidelines for their Christian faith and practice.

– By doing so, Paul and his companions sought to promote unity and prevent potential misunderstandings or conflicts among the believers in different regions.

Significance and Application:

  • The events described in Acts 16:4 highlight the importance of leadership and unity within the early Church. The apostles and elders in Jerusalem exercised their authority to make decisions based on biblical principles and guided the believers in various regions.
  • Today, this verse reminds us of the significance of leadership and the need for unity within the Church. Decisions made by church leaders should be grounded in Scripture and aimed at promoting the spiritual well-being of the community.
  • It also emphasises the value of effective communication and the sharing of important teachings and decisions. Clear communication of biblical principles helps believers grow in their faith and prevents misunderstandings.
  • As individual believers, we should strive to understand and adhere to the principles of Scripture, being open to the guidance of church leaders who have a responsibility to shepherd the flock.
