Acts 17:14
And then immediatly the brethren sent away Paul, to goe as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. Acts 17:14 (KJV)
Context: Acts 17:14 is part of the narrative of the Apostle Paul’s second missionary journey. In this chapter, Paul and his companions arrived in the city of Thessalonica and preached in the Jewish synagogue. However, they faced opposition and persecution from some Jews, prompting them to leave the city and continue their journey to Berea.
The Brethren: In this verse, “the brethren” refers to the believers in Thessalonica who were part of the Christian community. It is likely that they were concerned for Paul’s safety and wanted to ensure his well‑being.
Paul’s Departure: The verse states that the brethren sent Paul away “that he might go to the sea.” This means that they arranged for Paul to leave Thessalonica and head toward the sea, possibly as a means to ensure his safety or to provide him with a way to continue his journey to the next destination.
Silas and Timotheus: While Paul was sent away, Silas and Timotheus (Timothy) remained in Thessalonica. Silas was a companion and fellow worker of Paul, mentioned in several of his letters. Timothy, a young disciple of Paul, also accompanied him on his missionary journeys.
Implications: This verse highlights the support and concern of the early Christian community for Paul’s safety and ministry. It also indicates the strategic decision to have Paul continue his mission while Silas and Timothy remained behind to support the new believers in Thessalonica.
