Acts 20:4
“And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.”
Context:The book of Acts, written by Luke, records the early history of the Christian church and the activities of the apostles after Jesus’ ascension. In Acts 20, Paul is traveling and ministering to various churches. This verse provides a list of individuals who accompanied Paul during his journey.
Sopater of Berea:Sopater, a companion of Paul, was from Berea. This is likely the same Berea mentioned earlier in Acts 17:10-14, where Paul preached the gospel, and the Bereans received the message eagerly, searching the Scriptures daily to confirm its truth.
Aristarchus and Secundus:These two individuals were Thessalonians who joined Paul on his journey. Aristarchus is mentioned multiple times in the book of Acts (19:29; 27:2) and is described as a fellow worker and a prisoner with Paul. He later accompanies Paul to Rome (Colossians 4:10; Philemon 1:24). Secundus, on the other hand, is only mentioned in this verse.
Gaius of Derbe and Timothy:Gaius, a native of Derbe, and Timothy, well-known to Paul and his protégé, joined him in his travels. Timothy is a significant figure in the New Testament, mentioned in many of Paul’s letters. He was like a son to Paul and became a trusted companion and co-worker in spreading the gospel.
Tychicus and Trophimus:Tychicus and Trophimus, both from Asia, accompanied Paul as well. Tychicus is mentioned in several New Testament letters (Ephesians 6:21; Colossians 4:7; 2 Timothy 4:12) and is often described as a beloved brother and faithful minister. Trophimus is mentioned earlier in Acts (21:29) and was from Ephesus.
Significance:This verse highlights the teamwork and support that Paul received during his ministry. He had a group of dedicated individuals from various regions who traveled with him, providing companionship, assistance, and encouragement. These individuals were committed to spreading the gospel and supporting Paul in his mission.
