Acts 23:7

“And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Acts, which documents the early history of the Christian Church and the apostle Paul’s missionary journeys. In this particular section, Paul has been arrested and brought before the Jewish council, known as the Sanhedrin, to give an account of his actions and teachings.

In Acts 23:6, Paul perceives that the council is divided between Pharisees and Sadducees, who were two distinct Jewish religious sects at the time. Recognizing the opportunity to exploit their differences, Paul loudly proclaims, “Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question” (Acts 23:6, KJV).

This statement leads to a sharp dispute between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, as mentioned in Acts 23:7. The Pharisees believed in the resurrection of the dead, the existence of angels and spirits, and the adherence to the oral traditions in addition to the written Law. On the other hand, the Sadducees rejected these beliefs and focused solely on the written Law of Moses. Their disagreement over these theological matters caused a division among the members of the Sanhedrin.

It’s worth noting that Paul’s intention in making this declaration was not to create division for its own sake, but rather to shift the focus of the council’s attention away from himself and onto the theological dispute between the Pharisees and Sadducees. By doing so, he hoped to divert their attention from charging him with any wrongdoing and potentially create an opportunity for his defence.

This incident highlights how God’s providence can work even in the midst of difficult situations. Paul’s action inadvertently leads to a conflict among his accusers, allowing him to escape immediate harm and fulfil God’s purpose for him to testify in Rome (Acts 23:11).

In summary, Acts 23:7 portrays the division that arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees during Paul’s appearance before the Sanhedrin. This division provides an unexpected opportunity for Paul to escape harm and continue on his journey, ultimately fulfilling God’s plan for his life.
