Acts 23:9

Listen to this article

“And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative in the book of Acts, which describes the events that unfolded after the apostle Paul was arrested in Jerusalem. In this particular passage, a dispute arises among the Jewish religious leaders during Paul’s trial before the Sanhedrin.

Here’s a breakdown of the verse:

“And there arose a great cry”:The trial of Paul had become tumultuous, with emotions running high. A heated argument or disagreement broke out among the religious leaders present.

“And the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove”:The scribes who belonged to the Pharisees faction within the Sanhedrin stood up and engaged in a dispute or debate. The Pharisees were a religious sect known for their strict adherence to Jewish laws and traditions.

“Saying, We find no evil in this man”:The scribes of the Pharisees expressed their opinion regarding Paul, asserting that they found no wrongdoing or evil in him. They likely saw no valid reason for him to be on trial.

“But if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God”:In their deliberation, the scribes suggested that if Paul had received a revelation from a spirit or an angel, they should be cautious not to oppose or fight against God. This statement implies that they were open to the possibility that Paul’s actions or words may have been divinely inspired.

This verse reveals the divisions among the religious leaders of the time and highlights the complex dynamics that surrounded Paul’s trial. While some Pharisees were willing to consider the spiritual dimension of Paul’s defense, others held a different perspective and were more antagonistic toward him.

Overall, Acts 23:9 underscores the tension and conflicting viewpoints that arose during Paul’s trial, illustrating the challenges he faced as he boldly proclaimed the Gospel message in the midst of opposition.
