Acts 24:17
Now after many yeeres, I came to bring almes to my nation, & offrings: Acts 24:17 (KJV)
Acts 24 records the apostle Paul’s trial before the Roman governor Felix. The Jewish leaders had brought false accusations against Paul, and in this chapter he presents his defence, explaining his actions and purpose in coming to Jerusalem.
In verse 17 Paul mentions two distinct items: alms and offerings. Alms are charitable donations given to help the poor and needy, while offerings refer to gifts or sacrifices presented to God. It is likely that Paul had collected financial contributions from the Gentile churches he visited on his missionary journeys, intending to use those funds to aid impoverished believers in Jerusalem, as indicated in Romans 15:25‑26.
Paul’s stated motive is to bring alms to his nation, meaning the Jewish people. Although called to be an apostle to the Gentiles, Paul retained a deep concern for his fellow Jews and their welfare. By bringing alms he sought to demonstrate practical love and support for them, even as he proclaimed the gospel to the Gentile world.
The reference to offerings is not merely about supporting the old temple system. Rather, Paul brought offerings as a strategic response to the accusations that he was anti‑Jewish. By presenting offerings he showed respect for Jewish traditions without compromising the gospel message that salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ alone.
Paul’s emphasis on almsgiving aligns with Jesus’ teaching on loving one’s neighbour and caring for those in need (see Luke 10:25‑37). Throughout his ministry Paul consistently displayed a heart for the poor and marginalized, viewing the act of giving as a tangible expression of his faith and a way to demonstrate God’s love.
Acts 24:17 therefore challenges believers to consider the importance of compassion and generosity toward others, both within the church community and beyond. It reminds us that practical acts of love and support for those in need are essential, and it encourages believers to give faithfully and sacrificially to further the work of God’s kingdom.
