Acts 27:10

And said vnto them, Sirs, I perceiue that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not onely of the lading & ship, but also of our liues. Acts 27:10 (KJV)

The verse belongs to the narrative of Acts where the apostle Paul, a prisoner, is being taken to Rome. He and other prisoners are aboard a ship after the Day of Atonement, a time when sailing had become especially hazardous. Paul addresses the crew respectfully as “Sirs,” warning that the journey would bring hurt, damage to the cargo and vessel, and loss of life.

Paul’s perception is presented as a divinely‑given insight, likely through the Holy Spirit, that the voyage would be perilous. He offers this counsel to the centurion and the ship’s owner, urging them not to continue. Their decision to ignore the warning and press on sets the stage for the severe storm that later strikes the ship, causing extensive damage though, as Paul had foretold, all aboard survive.

From this account several lessons emerge for believers.

First, the importance of spiritual perception: followers of Christ are called to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading, which can provide discernment for wise choices.

Second, the value of godly counsel: Paul’s warning, rooted in divine insight, illustrates why seeking and heeding godly advice can prevent unnecessary harm.

Third, the consequences of disregarding God’s warnings are evident in the storm’s devastation and the danger faced by everyone on board. Overall, Acts 27:10 reminds us to align ourselves with God’s guidance, remain attentive to His leading, and respect godly counsel so that we may navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and discernment.
