Acts 27:17

Listen to this article

“And when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.”

This verse is part of the narrative in Acts 27, where the apostle Paul is being taken as a prisoner to Rome aboard a ship. The ship encountered a severe storm while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, and the sailors were in great danger. Here are a few key points to consider from this verse:

Taking up and using helps:In the face of the storm, the crew of the ship took action by using “helps” or means to secure and stabilize the ship. This shows their determination and resourcefulness in the midst of a crisis. It reminds us that even in difficult situations, we should be proactive and make use of the resources available to us.

Undergirding the ship:The crew used a technique called “undergirding” to reinforce the ship. Undergirding involved passing cables or ropes beneath the ship to hold it together and prevent it from breaking apart under the force of the waves. This demonstrates their practical wisdom and efforts to preserve the vessel.

Fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands:The crew’s fear of falling into the quicksands reflects their awareness of the treacherous conditions they were facing. The quicksands referred to shifting sandbars or shoals that posed a significant risk to the ship. This fear highlights the perilous nature of their journey and the need for caution and careful navigation.

Striking sail and being driven:To respond to the storm, the sailors struck the sails, reducing the surface area exposed to the wind. This action helped to stabilize the ship and prevent it from being driven off course or capsized. It demonstrates the crew’s efforts to control the situation by adapting to the circumstances and making the necessary adjustments.

Overall, this verse in Acts 27:17 provides insight into the challenges faced by Paul and the crew during their journey. It illustrates the importance of taking practical measures, being aware of potential dangers, and making adjustments when facing difficult circumstances. It also serves as a reminder that even in the midst of storms and challenges, God provides us with the wisdom, strength, and resources to navigate through them.
