Acts 27:21

But after long abstinence, Paul stood foorth in the middes of them, and said, Sirs, yee should haue hearkened vnto mee, and not haue loosed from Creete, and to haue gained this harme and losse. Acts 27:21 (KJV)

The verse occurs within the dramatic narrative of Acts 27, which records the apostle Paul’s perilous voyage as a prisoner from Caesarea to Rome. Paul, together with other prisoners, Roman soldiers, sailors, and numerous passengers, set out on a ship bound for Italy. Early in the journey a fierce wind known as Euroclydon (a north‑easterly gale) struck, driving the vessel off course and creating a dangerous situation for all on board.

In chapter 27 Paul had already warned the centurion and the crew that the voyage would be disastrous and could result in great loss of life (verse 9). The centurion, however, chose to follow the advice of the ship’s pilot and owner rather than Paul’s counsel, and the ship continued on its course. A few days later, a strong north‑easterly wind (verse 14) intensified the storm, forcing the crew to throw cargo overboard to lighten the ship. Despair grew among the passengers as hope of rescue seemed distant.

Against this backdrop, verse 21 records Paul’s “long abstinence,” likely a period of fasting or prayerful seeking of God’s guidance during the crisis. Standing in the midst of the ship’s occupants, Paul addresses them respectfully as “Sirs” and rebukes them, saying they should have hearkened to his warning and not set sail from Crete. By ignoring his counsel, they incurred the very “harm and loss” he had foretold.

Paul’s role throughout the episode is that of a faithful witness who, despite the dire circumstances, encourages the believers to keep confidence in God (see verses 22‑25). The passage underscores the importance of heeding godly advice and remaining steadfast in faith during trials. It reminds readers that divine wisdom, when ignored, can lead to preventable suffering, while trust in God’s providence offers hope even amid the fiercest storms.
