But when the fourteenth night was come, as wee were driuen vp and downe in Adria about midnight, the shipmen deemed that they drew neere to some countrey: Acts 27:27 (KJV)

Context: Understanding the Setting

Acts 27 describes the events that occurred during Paul’s journey to Rome. He was being taken as a prisoner, accompanied by other prisoners and a Roman centurion named Julius. They set sail from Caesarea and faced several challenges along the way.

The Fourteenth Night: Passage of Time

The verse begins by mentioning the “fourteenth night.” This indicates that they have been at sea for a considerable amount of time, giving a sense of the duration of their voyage and emphasizing the severity and prolonged nature of the storm.

Driven up and down in Adria: Turbulent Journey

The phrase “driven up and down in Adria” suggests that the ship was being tossed and turned by the storm, making their journey tumultuous and unpredictable. Adria (the Adriatic Sea) lies between Italy and the Balkan Peninsula, a region where such a storm could easily toss a vessel.

Midnight: Darkness and Uncertainty

The events occurred “about midnight.” Midnight is often associated with darkness, symbolizing uncertainty and the challenges faced during this part of the journey. It adds to the atmosphere of the story and highlights the dramatic nature of the events.

Shipmen Deemed They Drew Near to Some Country: Misperceived Land

At midnight the sailors believed they were nearing land. Their assessment proved mistaken; later the ship ran aground on a sandbar and struck a reef, showing they were not yet safely ashore. This misperception could have arisen from exhaustion, confusion, or lack of visibility during the storm.

Application: Trusting in God’s Guidance

This verse teaches several lessons. First, it reminds us that even in the midst of challenging circumstances, God is with us. Like Paul and the others on the ship, we may face storms and uncertainty, yet we can trust in God’s guidance and provision, knowing He is in control.

Second, it highlights the importance of discernment. The sailors’ incorrect assessment led to further complications. In our own lives we should seek God’s wisdom and discernment, being careful not to rely solely on our limited understanding.

Finally, the passage emphasizes the need for perseverance. The journey for Paul and his companions was long and arduous, but they pressed on, trusting in God’s plan and provision. In our spiritual journeys we may encounter trials, but we should continue to persevere, knowing that God is faithful and will see us through.
