Acts 28:1

Listen to this article

“And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.”

Context:The Book of Acts was written by Luke and serves as a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. Acts recounts the early history of the Christian Church, focusing primarily on the acts of the apostles, especially Peter and Paul. In Acts 28, we find Paul’s journey to Rome as a prisoner after appealing to Caesar. He encounters several events along the way that demonstrate God’s faithfulness and Paul’s commitment to sharing the Gospel.

Escape from the Shipwreck:Prior to verse 1, Paul and his companions were shipwrecked on the island of Malta (Melita). The shipwreck occurred due to a violent storm as they were traveling to Rome. However, by God’s grace, everyone on board survived and reached the shore safely (Acts 27:39-44).

Discovering the Island of Melita:In Acts 28:1, the text states that after the shipwreck, Paul and the others who were with him realized they had landed on an island called Melita. Melita refers to the island known today as Malta, which is located in the Mediterranean Sea. The mention of this island provides geographical context and helps us understand where Paul and his companions found themselves after the shipwreck.

Significance of the Island:The island of Melita (Malta) played a crucial role in Paul’s ministry and the spreading of the Gospel. Though Paul and his companions initially arrived on the island as shipwreck survivors, they soon encountered the local people, who showed them unusual kindness and hospitality. Acts 28:2 states that the Maltese people kindled a fire for Paul and the others, welcomed them, and provided assistance.

Paul’s Ministry on Malta:While on the island, Paul had an opportunity to demonstrate God’s power and perform miracles. Acts 28:3-9 narrates an incident where Paul was bitten by a venomous snake but suffered no harm. This event astonished the people of Malta, and they regarded Paul as a godly figure. As a result, Paul was able to heal the father of Publius, the chief official of the island, along with many others who were sick.

Spreading the Gospel:Paul’s time on Malta allowed him to proclaim the Gospel and bring many people to faith in Jesus Christ. Acts 28:10 mentions that the people of Malta honored Paul and his companions with many provisions as they prepared to leave the island. Additionally, the islanders furnished them with everything they needed for their journey.

Lessons from Acts 28:1: This verse reminds us of God’s providence and protection over Paul and his companions during their difficult journey. Despite the shipwreck and its potential dangers, they were led to a safe haven where they experienced kindness, witnessed God’s power through miracles, and had the opportunity to share the Gospel. It illustrates God’s faithfulness even in the midst of challenging circumstances and highlights the importance of being open to God’s leading in unexpected places.
