Who also honoured vs with many honours, and when wee departed, they laded vs with such things as were necessary. Acts 28:10 (KJV)

Acts 28 concludes the book of Acts and records the events after the Apostle Paul’s shipwreck on the island of Malta. Paul and the rest of the shipwrecked crew were kindly received by the island’s natives, who showed them great hospitality and kindness. During their stay Paul performed miracles of healing, including healing the father of Publius, the chief official of the island, and many others.

Hospitality and Kindness: In this verse the Maltese natives demonstrate great honor and hospitality toward Paul and his companions. They treated them with respect and supplied what they needed. Their example underscores the biblical value of showing kindness and hospitality, especially to those in need. As Christians we are called to love and serve others just as the people of Malta did.

God’s Providence: The favorable treatment Paul received on Malta can be seen as a manifestation of God’s providence. Despite the dangers of the shipwreck, God provided safety and support through the generosity of the locals. This reminds us that God is continually present and active in our lives, even in unexpected and difficult circumstances.

Gratitude: The phrase “they laded us with such things as were necessary” highlights the generous provision of supplies for the onward journey. It calls believers to a posture of gratitude, expressing appreciation when others go out of their way to help. Gratitude cultivates humility and strengthens relationships.

God’s Faithfulness: Throughout Acts we see God’s faithfulness to Paul and the spread of the Gospel. Even amid trials, God guided and blessed him. This verse exemplifies that faithfulness, as God used the people of Malta to honor and support Paul, enabling him to continue his mission.

Application: Let us practice hospitality and kindness to those in need, demonstrating God’s love in tangible ways. Recognise God’s providence in our circumstances, trusting that He works for our good and His purposes. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude, openly thanking those who bless us, and never take acts of kindness for granted. Hold fast to God’s faithfulness, relying on Him to provide for our needs as we follow His calling. By studying Acts 28:10 we gain insight into God’s character and learn valuable lessons for our interactions with others and our relationship with Him.
