Listen to this article

“The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.”

1. Context: Acts 3:13 is part of Peter’s sermon after the healing of a lame beggar at the gate of the temple. The miracle had drawn a large crowd, and Peter took the opportunity to preach about Jesus Christ and the message of salvation.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: In this verse, Peter begins by establishing a connection with the Jewish audience. He refers to God as “the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob,” invoking the patriarchs and the covenant God made with them. By doing so, Peter emphasizes that the God he is about to speak of is the same God who had been revered throughout Jewish history.

God has glorified His Son Jesus: Peter then declares that God, the God of the patriarchs, has glorified His Son, Jesus. This statement highlights the divinity of Jesus and affirms that He is the fulfillment of God’s promises and the culmination of the Old Testament prophecies.

Delivered up and denied by the people: Peter addresses the guilt of his audience by reminding them that they delivered up and denied Jesus in the presence of Pilate. He refers to the events leading to Jesus’ crucifixion, emphasizing the responsibility and accountability of the people for their rejection of the Messiah.

Pilate’s intention to let Jesus go: Peter adds a significant detail to the account by mentioning that Pilate was determined to release Jesus. This serves to further emphasize the unjust treatment and rejection of Jesus by the people.

6. Key themes:

  • a. God’s faithfulness: By referencing the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Peter emphasizes God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises and fulfilling His covenant through Jesus Christ.
  • b. The divinity of Jesus: Peter proclaims Jesus as the Son of God who has been glorified by the Father, reinforcing the belief in Jesus’ divine nature.
  • c. Personal responsibility: Peter reminds the crowd of their active role in Jesus’ crucifixion, highlighting the importance of personal accountability and repentance.

7. Application:

  • a. Recognizing Jesus as the Son of God: Like the Jewish audience in Acts 3, we are called to acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the Savior of the world.
  • b. Repentance and accountability: This verse reminds us of the need for personal repentance and accountability for our actions. We should examine our hearts and turn away from any rejection or denial of Jesus in our lives.
  • c. Embracing God’s faithfulness: Just as God remained faithful to His promises in the past, we can trust in His faithfulness today. We can rely on His promises and experience the transformative power of His Son, Jesus Christ.
