Acts 4:22

For the man was aboue fourtie yeeres olde, on whome this miracle of healing was shewed. Acts 4:22 (KJV)

Acts 4:22 follows the dramatic healing of a man who had been lame from birth, performed by Peter and John at the temple gate called Beautiful. The verse notes that the man was “above forty years old,” a detail that underscores the magnitude of the miracle because the disability had persisted for a lifetime. The public display of the healing—”this miracle of healing was shewed”—means that many witnesses saw the formerly crippled man walking, leaping, and praising God.

The surrounding narrative (Acts 4:1‑21) shows that the apostles faced arrest and opposition from religious authorities who were disturbed by their proclamation of Jesus and the resurrection. The miracle served as tangible evidence of the power and authority given to the apostles through Christ. It also provided a powerful platform for Peter and John to testify about Jesus, using the astonishment of the crowd to draw attention to the Gospel.

Although the text does not record the healed man’s personal faith, his presence at the temple gate suggests he was seeking alms. The apostles’ faith and obedience to God were central to the miraculous event, demonstrating that divine power can intervene in even the most entrenched conditions.

The public witnessing of the miracle was crucial. The healed man became a living testimony, and the crowd’s reaction opened opportunities for the apostles to proclaim the truth of the resurrection and the need for repentance. This underscores the importance of public testimony in the spread of the Gospel.

Application of this passage encourages believers today to trust in God’s power, recognizing that miracles are not limited by the length or severity of a person’s suffering. It also reminds Christians to seize moments when God’s work is displayed publicly, using those occasions to share the Gospel boldly. In sum, Acts 4:22 highlights God’s transformative power, the role of faith, and the strategic value of public testimony in advancing the message of Christ.
