Acts 5:3

Listen to this article

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?”

1. Context: Acts 5:3 is part of the narrative in the book of Acts, which describes the early days of the Christian church and the works of the apostles. In this particular verse, Peter confronts Ananias regarding his deceitful action.

2. The Setting: Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, had sold a piece of property and decided to keep back a portion of the proceeds while presenting the rest as a full donation to the apostles. They conspired together to deceive the church and make it seem like they were giving the entire amount.

3. Peter’s Rebuke: When Peter confronts Ananias, he starts by addressing the root cause of his actions, saying, “Why hath Satan filled thine heart?” Peter recognizes that Satan has influenced Ananias to lie and act deceitfully. Peter goes on to emphasize that Ananias has not lied to men but to the Holy Spirit. By attempting to deceive the apostles and the church, Ananias is ultimately lying to God.

4. Importance of Honesty and Integrity: Acts 5:3 highlights the significance of honesty and integrity within the Christian community. Ananias and Sapphira’s sin was not in keeping part of the money but in their deceitful attempt to deceive others and pretend to be more generous than they actually were. The early church emphasized the importance of sincerity and truthfulness, and this event served as a powerful lesson for the believers.

5. Consequences of Sin: Acts 5:5 records the immediate consequence of Ananias’ sin: “And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost.” God’s judgment was swift and severe in this instance. Ananias’ sudden death shocked the early church and served as a stern warning about the seriousness of hypocrisy and deceit in the community of believers.

6. Fear and Awe: The events following Ananias’ death caused “great fear” to come upon the church and all who heard about it (Acts 5:5,11). The believers recognized the holiness of God and the importance of purity within the body of Christ. This incident led to a deep reverence for God’s presence and a caution against any form of hypocrisy or dishonesty.

7. Lessons for Believers: Acts 5:3 reminds us of the importance of honesty, integrity, and sincerity in our actions and dealings with others. It serves as a warning against hypocrisy, deceit, and attempting to impress others with false appearances. We are called to be transparent, genuine, and upright in our interactions, knowing that God sees the intentions of our hearts.
