Acts 6:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch.”

Historical Context:The book of Acts is the fifth book of the New Testament and serves as a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. It chronicles the early days of the Christian church, highlighting the spread of the gospel and the work of the apostles and other believers. Acts 6 takes place shortly after the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples, empowering them for ministry.

The Growth of the Early Church:In Acts 6, the church was experiencing rapid growth, and as a result, some issues arose within the community of believers. One particular problem was the complaint of the Greek-speaking Jews against the Hebrew-speaking Jews concerning the distribution of food to widows. The apostles recognised the importance of addressing this issue and ensuring that the ministry of the Word was not neglected.

The Appointment of the Seven:To resolve the dispute, the apostles proposed that the church select seven men who were known for their good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, to be in charge of overseeing the distribution of food. The proposal pleased the whole multitude, and they chose seven individuals to serve in this role.

Stephen’s Selection:Among the seven chosen to serve was Stephen, whose name appears first in the list. Stephen is described as a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. This description highlights Stephen’s deep spiritual qualities and his close relationship with God. Stephen’s selection indicates the importance of his character and spiritual maturity in carrying out the responsibilities assigned to him.

Significance of Stephen’s Ministry:Stephen’s appointment as one of the seven marks a significant turning point in the book of Acts. He is the first person other than the apostles to be specifically mentioned for his ministry and service. In the following chapters, Stephen’s powerful preaching, signs, and wonders are recorded. He becomes the first Christian martyr, giving his life for the sake of the gospel.

Application to our Lives:Acts 6:5 reminds us of the importance of character and spiritual maturity in serving God and others. Stephen’s faith and fullness of the Holy Spirit were evident in his life, enabling him to effectively minister to others. As believers, we are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit, cultivate our faith, and serve with integrity and love. Stephen’s example challenges us to be devoted to God and to faithfully carry out our ministries, regardless of the challenges we may face.

In conclusion, Acts 6:5 highlights the selection of Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, to serve in the early church. It teaches us the importance of character and spiritual maturity in serving God and others. Stephen’s example challenges us to live out our faith and serve with dedication and integrity.
