Acts 7:17
“But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt.”
Context:The Book of Acts is a historical account of the early Christian church and the spread of the gospel message after Jesus’ ascension. In Acts 7, Stephen, one of the first deacons of the church, delivers a sermon before the Jewish religious leaders, recounting the history of Israel.
Promise to Abraham:The verse references the promise that God had sworn to Abraham. This promise was originally given to Abraham in Genesis 15:13-14, where God told Abraham that his descendants would be strangers in a land not their own and would be enslaved for 400 years. However, God promised to bring judgment on that nation and deliver Abraham’s descendants with great possessions.
Time of the promise drawing near:Stephen refers to the period when the time of the promise to Abraham was about to be fulfilled. This refers to the events leading up to the Exodus from Egypt, when the Israelites were in bondage and slavery for approximately 400 years.
Multiplication in Egypt:Stephen states that during this time, the people of Israel grew and multiplied in Egypt. Despite their suffering and oppression, God blessed the Israelites and caused them to increase in number. This fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham demonstrated His faithfulness and providence.
- Spiritual Application:The verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Even in the midst of challenging circumstances, God can bring growth, multiplication, and blessings. It also highlights the importance of patience and trust in God’s timing. The fulfilment of God’s promises may not always happen according to our timetable, but we can have confidence that He will fulfil them in His perfect time.
