Listen to this article

“I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.”

Context:This verse is part of Stephen’s defense before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, shortly before he was stoned to death. Stephen recounts the history of Israel, emphasizing God’s faithfulness and the people’s repeated disobedience. In this particular verse, Stephen is referring to Moses and the burning bush incident, where God commissioned Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

Key Themes:God’s Awareness:The verse begins with the affirmation that God has seen and heard the affliction and groaning of His people in Egypt. This highlights God’s omniscience and His concern for the suffering of His people. Even in their distress, God had not turned a blind eye to their situation. God’s Action:God declares that He has come down to deliver His people. This reveals His active involvement in the affairs of humanity. Despite the oppression they faced, God had a plan to rescue His people from their bondage and bring them into a land of promise. Divine Commission:God informs Moses that He will send him back to Egypt to carry out this deliverance. This demonstrates God’s chosen instrument for accomplishing His purposes. Moses was entrusted with the task of leading the Israelites out of Egypt, and God’s presence would be with him to fulfill this mission. Historical Significance:Stephen references this event from Israel’s history to show the pattern of God’s intervention in the lives of His people. It serves as a reminder to the Jewish leaders that God had always been actively involved in the nation’s affairs and had sent messengers to deliver them in times of need.

Application:God is aware of our struggles:Just as God saw and heard the affliction of the Israelites, He is also aware of our individual struggles and challenges. We can take comfort in knowing that God is attentive to our circumstances and is ready to help us in our times of need. Trusting in God’s deliverance:The story of Moses and the Israelites reminds us that God is a deliverer. When we find ourselves in difficult situations or facing bondage, we can trust that God is working behind the scenes to bring about our deliverance. We should rely on His strength and guidance, knowing that He will fulfill His promises. Responding to God’s commission:Like Moses, we may be called by God to fulfill a specific task or mission. When God calls us, He equips us and promises His presence. It is essential to heed His call, step out in faith, and be obedient to His leading, knowing that He will empower us to fulfill the purpose He has for our lives. Remembering God’s faithfulness:The recounting of God’s intervention in the history of Israel serves as a reminder of His faithfulness throughout the ages. We should reflect on God’s past acts of deliverance and provision in our lives and in the lives of others. This will strengthen our faith and give us confidence in His ability to bring about His purposes.

In conclusion, Acts 7:34 reminds us of God’s awareness, His active involvement in human affairs, and His faithfulness to deliver His people. It encourages us to trust in His provision, respond to His calling, and remember His past acts of deliverance.
