Acts 7:58

Listen to this article

“And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.”

Context:Acts 7 records the powerful sermon delivered by Stephen, one of the first deacons appointed by the early church. He was accused of speaking against the temple and the law, which led to his trial before the Jewish council. In his defence, Stephen recounted the history of Israel and the pattern of rebellion against God, ultimately accusing the religious leaders of rejecting the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Stephen’s boldness and conviction enraged the council, and they became furious with him.

Observation:

Persecution and Martyrdom:Acts 7:58 describes the tragic outcome of Stephen’s defence. The council, driven by anger, cast him out of the city and stoned him to death. This event marks the first recorded martyrdom for the cause of Christ in the New Testament.

Witnesses’ Actions:The witnesses who testified against Stephen, according to Jewish law, were required to be actively involved in the execution by throwing the first stones. As the witnesses began to stone Stephen, they laid down their outer garments at the feet of a young man named Saul (who later became the apostle Paul).

Saul’s Presence:Saul’s presence at this event is significant. Although not directly involved in Stephen’s stoning, he played a crucial role in the persecution of the early Christians before his conversion. Saul’s presence here foreshadows his transformation from a persecutor of the church to one of its greatest advocates.

Interpretation:

The Cost of Faith:Stephen’s martyrdom highlights the intense opposition and persecution faced by the early Christians. His steadfast commitment to the truth cost him his life. This passage reminds us that following Jesus and standing for the truth may come at great personal cost, including persecution and even martyrdom. It challenges believers to consider the depth of their faith and their willingness to remain faithful even in the face of adversity.

Forgiveness and Transformation:Saul’s presence as a young man observing Stephen’s stoning demonstrates the depth of God’s grace and the potential for transformation in a person’s life. Later in Acts 9, Saul encounters the risen Christ and experiences a radical conversion. He becomes Paul, the apostle who would go on to play a pivotal role in spreading the gospel and establishing churches throughout the Roman Empire. This passage serves as a reminder that God’s grace and forgiveness are available to all, regardless of their past or their role in opposition to the gospel.

Application:

  • Courageous Witness:Stephen’s unwavering commitment to the truth challenges believers to be bold and courageous in sharing their faith, even in the face of opposition or potential harm. This passage encourages Christians to stand firm in their convictions and be willing to bear witness to the gospel, regardless of the consequences.
  • Praying for Transformation:Saul’s presence at Stephen’s stoning reminds us of the power of prayer and the transformative work of God’s grace. It encourages believers to pray fervently for those who oppose the gospel, trusting that God can bring about radical transformations in their lives. We should not give up on anyone but rather intercede on their behalf, just as many believers likely prayed for Saul before his conversion.
  • Counting the Cost:Stephen’s martyrdom challenges believers to examine their own commitment to Christ. It prompts us to consider whether we are willing to pay the price for our faith and to remain faithful to Jesus even in the midst of adversity. It reminds us to count the cost of discipleship and to commit our lives fully to the cause of Christ.

Conclusion:

Acts 7:58 presents a sobering account of Stephen’s martyrdom and the presence of Saul, who would later become the apostle Paul. This passage encourages believers to be courageous witnesses for Christ, to pray for the transformation of those who oppose the gospel, and to count the cost of discipleship. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by early Christians and their unwavering commitment to the truth, inspiring us to live out our faith with boldness and conviction.
