Listen to this article

But all that heard him, were amazed, and said, Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this Name in Hierusalem, and came hither for that intent that he might bring them bound vnto the chiefe Priests? Acts 9:21 (KJV)

Context: Acts 9:21 is part of the narrative describing the dramatic conversion of Saul of Tarsus, who later became known as the apostle Paul. Prior to his conversion, Saul vehemently persecuted followers of Jesus, seeking to arrest and imprison them. However, his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus changed his life forever.

Saul’s Transformation: The verse highlights the reaction of those who heard Saul speak after his conversion. They were astonished and amazed by the radical change in his life. The former persecutor of Christians was now proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ, a striking reversal that underscores the life‑changing power of encountering Christ.

The People’s Response: Their amazement demonstrates their recognition of Saul’s past actions against those who invoked the name of Jesus. They recalled how he had sought to destroy those who called upon the name of Jesus in Jerusalem and even to bring them bound before the chief priests. This stark contrast between his former hostility and his new proclamation caused them to question whether the man who had once destroyed the church could now be preaching its message.

The Power of the Name of Jesus: The reaction also emphasizes the significance of the name of Jesus within the early Christian community. The people’s astonishment shows that they understood the weight of the name they had once opposed and now heard proclaimed by the very man who had tried to eradicate it.

God’s Sovereign Plan: This verse underscores God’s sovereign intervention in Saul’s life. Though Saul had set out on a mission to persecute Christians, God interrupted his plans and turned his heart. The unexpected transformation of Saul into Paul serves as a reminder that God can bring profound change to anyone, no matter how far they have strayed or what their intentions were.

The Impact of Personal Testimony: The reaction of those who heard Saul’s testimony highlights the power of personal testimonies in evangelism. Saul’s dramatic conversion and his bold proclamation of Jesus’ name drew attention, challenged preconceptions, and invited others to reflect on their own beliefs. Personal testimony can touch hearts and invite others to consider the transforming power of Christ.

In conclusion, Acts 9:21 captures the astonishment of the people who heard Saul (Paul) preach after his conversion. It emphasizes the transformation brought about by encountering Jesus, the significance of the name of Jesus, God’s sovereign plan, and the impact of personal testimonies. This verse reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s transforming grace and that our own encounters with Jesus can have a profound impact on others.
