And there he found a certaine man named Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight yeeres, and was sicke of the palsie. Acts 9:33 (KJV)

Acts 9 recounts the conversion of Saul, who later became known as the apostle Paul. In this chapter Saul encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus, his life is dramatically transformed, and after his conversion he begins to preach the gospel. Acts 9:33 is part of the narrative describing a miracle performed by Peter.

Aeneas: The verse introduces a man named Aeneas who had been bedridden for eight years and was suffering from paralysis caused by palsy. His condition was debilitating and he was unable to move or function normally.

The encounter: In the preceding verses Peter, one of the prominent apostles of Jesus, had been traveling through Lydda. Upon his arrival he encounters Aeneas, who is paralyzed and confined to his bed. Peter, being filled with the Holy Spirit, recognizes the opportunity for a miracle.

Peter’s faith and action: Peter approaches Aeneas and, in the name of Jesus Christ, speaks words of healing and restoration. He says, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed,” or commands him to arise and walk.

Healing and its significance: As Peter speaks the words of faith, Aeneas is instantly healed. He receives strength and is able to get up from the bed to which he had been confined for eight long years. This miraculous healing testifies to the power of Jesus Christ and the authority granted to His disciples.

Symbolic meaning: Aeneas’ physical healing also carries symbolic significance. It illustrates the power of the gospel to bring spiritual healing and restoration to those who are spiritually paralyzed or bedridden because of sin, guilt, or brokenness, highlighting the transformative nature of encountering Christ.

Witness and impact: The healing of Aeneas has a profound impact on the people of Lydda and the surrounding region. Many who witness this miracle turn to the Lord and believe in Jesus Christ, and the event serves as a catalyst for the spread of the gospel and the growth of the early Christian community.

Overall, Acts 9:33 showcases the compassion, faith, and miraculous power of God through Peter’s ministry. It demonstrates the authority bestowed upon the apostles and the transformative impact of encountering Jesus Christ, offering a testimony to both physical and spiritual restoration available through faith in Him.
