Amos 1:6
“Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom.”
Context:The book of Amos is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Amos was a shepherd and fig-tree farmer who received a divine call from God to prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel during the reigns of Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel. The book primarily contains messages of judgment against various nations, including Israel and its surrounding neighbors.
Identification of the nation:In this verse, the Lord is addressing the city-state of Gaza, which was one of the prominent Philistine cities.
The indictment of Gaza:The passage begins by stating, “For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four.” This poetic language signifies that Gaza had committed multiple offenses and had reached a point of divine judgment. It emphasizes the seriousness and accumulation of their sins.
Carrying away the whole captivity:The verse states that Gaza “carried away captive the whole captivity.” This phrase refers to the action of forcefully capturing and enslaving the Israelites from their homeland. Gaza, as a city-state, was involved in the slave trade and had taken the entire population of captives, delivering them up to Edom. Edom was another neighbouring nation known for its hostility towards Israel.
Consequences:As a result of their actions, God declares that He will not turn away the punishment of Gaza. Their sins had reached a tipping point, and judgment was inevitable. The punishment would be carried out according to God’s divine justice.
