Amos 2:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:26

And hee that is couragious among the mighty, shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord. Amos 2:16 (KJV)

And

he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD. Amos 2:16 (KJV)

Amos 2:15‑16 presents a stark warning to Israel, emphasizing that even the most skilled and powerful warriors will not escape divine judgment. The passage begins, “Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.” This language points to archers, swift runners, and horsemen—symbols of military strength and mobility in the ancient world. The prophet declares that none of these advantages will save the people when God’s judgment comes.

The final clause, “And the strongest among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD,” underscores the total helplessness of even the most powerful individuals. The strongest and most courageous will be stripped of their security and flee in shame. The verse therefore highlights the sovereignty of God over nations and individuals, showing that earthly power cannot thwart His righteous decree.

In its broader context, the passage is part of a series of judgments pronounced against Israel for its sins, especially social injustice and oppression. Amos warns that reliance on military prowess, speed, or wealth will prove futile. The message calls the people to recognize that true deliverance comes only from obedience to God, not from human strength or material advantage. The study of this text invites believers to examine where they place their confidence and to trust wholly in the Lord’s justice and mercy, remembering that divine judgment transcends any earthly might.
