Amos 6:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:53

“Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?”

Context:Amos 6:2 is a part of the book of Amos, which is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. The book of Amos contains messages of judgment and warning to Israel and surrounding nations. In this verse, the prophet Amos challenges the people of Israel to reflect upon the fate of other nations and consider their own position.

To better understand the verse, let’s break it down: “Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great…” Calneh and Hamath were significant cities in the region during that time. By urging the people to visit these cities, Amos is inviting them to witness the ruins and destruction that had befallen these once-great cities. He wants them to observe the consequences of disobedience and the judgment of God upon nations that have strayed from His ways.

“…then go down to Gath of the Philistines…” Gath was one of the five major cities of the Philistines, enemies of Israel. Amos directs the attention of the people to Gath, a city known for its military power and influence. He asks whether the Philistine cities are superior to Israel and if their borders are larger than Israel’s. The question implies that the people of Israel had become complacent and were relying on their own strength and security, disregarding the consequences of their actions.

“Be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?” Amos questions the people, challenging their presumption of security and superiority. He asks if the neighboring kingdoms and their borders are truly better or greater than Israel’s. The purpose is to make the people realize that their privileged position as God’s chosen people does not exempt them from accountability and judgment.

The overall message of Amos 6:2 is one of warning and rebuke. Amos uses the example of neighboring nations, once prosperous and powerful, to remind the people of Israel that they too are subject to God’s judgment. The verse emphasizes the importance of humility, obedience, and dependence on God rather than relying on their own strength and status.

In the larger context of the book of Amos, this verse is part of a series of prophecies that denounce Israel’s pride, oppression of the poor, and moral decay. Amos calls for repentance and a return to righteousness before it is too late. The message extends beyond the ancient Israelites and can be applied to us today, reminding us to examine our own lives and ensure that we are not complacent in our faith or dismissive of God’s call to righteousness.
