Amos 6:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:53
Listen to this article

“That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to examine its context within the book of Amos. The preceding verses depict the people of Israel living in abundance, engaging in excessive feasting, music, and revelry, while neglecting the social and spiritual responsibilities that God had entrusted to them. Amos pronounces judgment on the Israelites for their complacency and failure to care for the less fortunate.

Drinking wine in bowls:The phrase “drink wine in bowls” highlights the extravagance and opulence of the wealthy individuals in Israel. It suggests a display of wealth and indulgence, as drinking from bowls or large vessels was associated with lavish banquets and excess.

Anointing with chief ointments:Anointing with expensive ointments was a practice associated with luxury and status. The anointing of oneself with the “chief” or finest ointments further emphasizes the luxurious lifestyle of the affluent members of society.

Lack of concern for the affliction of Joseph:“Joseph” in this verse represents the whole nation of Israel, referring to the descendants of the patriarch Jacob, who was also known as Israel. Despite their material prosperity, the wealthy individuals were unconcerned about the suffering and affliction of their fellow countrymen. They were indifferent to the needs of the less fortunate and failed to fulfill their responsibilities to care for the poor and vulnerable among them.

Spiritual and social implications:Amos highlights the spiritual and moral failure of the people who were preoccupied with their own comfort and pleasure, neglecting their duty to pursue justice, righteousness, and compassion. This verse serves as a condemnation of the self-centredness and apathy displayed by the wealthy, challenging them to recognise and address the social injustices prevalent in their society.

Application today:While the immediate context of this verse pertains to the ancient Israelites, it carries important lessons for believers today. It reminds us to examine our own lives and consider whether we are using our resources, wealth, and influence to bless others and alleviate the suffering of those around us. It encourages us to cultivate empathy, compassion, and a commitment to justice, rather than being consumed by materialism and self-indulgence.

In summary, Amos 6:6 addresses the luxurious lifestyle and lack of concern for the afflicted within the wealthy class of ancient Israel. It serves as a reminder to prioritise justice, compassion, and the welfare of others over self-indulgence and materialism.
