Listen to this article

“And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.”

Context:To understand the significance of Amos 7:15, it’s essential to have some context about the book of Amos. Amos was a prophet who prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II in the northern kingdom of Israel. The book of Amos contains a series of visions and oracles where Amos delivers God’s messages of judgment against Israel for their sins and social injustices.

Humble Background:In this verse, Amos recalls his calling as a prophet. He describes himself as a shepherd who was chosen by the Lord while he was tending to his flock. This highlights the humble origins of Amos and his unlikely position as a prophet. It demonstrates that God can choose and use anyone for His purposes, regardless of their social status or occupation.

Divine Commission:The Lord instructs Amos to go and prophesy to His people, the nation of Israel. This verse emphasizes the divine authority behind Amos’s prophetic message. It highlights that Amos is not speaking on his own accord but has been specifically appointed by God to deliver His message to the people.

Obedience and Willingness:Amos’s response to God’s command is not explicitly stated in this verse, but the subsequent verses reveal his obedience and willingness to fulfill his prophetic calling. Amos faithfully delivers God’s messages of judgment and warns the people of the consequences of their sins.

Application:Amos 7:15 teaches us several valuable lessons. Firstly, it reminds us that God often chooses ordinary individuals to accomplish His purposes. Our background or occupation does not disqualify us from being used by God. Secondly, it emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s calling. Like Amos, we are called to be faithful and obedient to the tasks God has given us, whether they are big or small. Finally, this verse encourages us to be willing instruments for God’s work. When God calls us, He equips us with what we need to fulfill His purpose.

  • Overall, Amos 7:15 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty in choosing His messengers and the importance of obedience and willingness in fulfilling His purposes.
