Colossians 1:7

Posted on 18 May at 13:54

As yee also learned of Epaphras our deare felow seruant, who is for you a faithfull Minister of Christ: Colossians 1:7 (KJV)

To understand this verse it helps to consider its place within the letter to the Colossians. The Apostle Paul wrote the epistle while imprisoned, addressing false teaching and urging the believers to stand firm in their faith in Christ.

In the passage Paul mentions Epaphras, a fellow servant of Christ and a faithful minister. Tradition holds that he was closely associated with the Colossian church, though the text does not specify his birthplace or that he founded the congregation. He is clearly regarded as a valued co‑worker of Paul (see Colossians 4:12‑13; Philemon 1:23).

The wording of the verse indicates that the Colossians had learned from Epaphras. He taught them about the gospel, the person of Christ, and the core doctrines of the faith, nurturing their spiritual growth and deepening their understanding of God’s truth. Even if the text does not explicitly state every detail, his inclusion highlights his dedication to serving the believers in Colossae.

Epaphras is described as a faithful minister of Christ. This implies that he faithfully carried out his responsibilities as a servant of God—preaching the gospel, caring for the spiritual needs of the church, and supporting the community. His faithfulness serves as an example for all who labor in Christian ministry.

The mention of Epaphras underscores the importance of faithful ministers and teachers within the body of Christ. It reminds believers to be receptive to sound teaching, to honor and support those who diligently serve Christ, and to appreciate the work of those who labor in the ministry of the Word.

Overall, Colossians 1:7 underscores the importance of faithful ministers like Epaphras in the spiritual growth of believers and calls us to appreciate and support them in their ministry. Likewise, Colossians 4:12 reminds us of the role that such faithful ministers play in encouraging believers to learn from those who diligently serve Christ.
