Colossians 1:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”

Context:To understand Colossians 1:9 better, it’s important to grasp the broader context of the passage. The book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Colossae, a city in ancient Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Paul wrote this letter while he was imprisoned, around AD 60-62. The purpose of the letter was to address the heretical teachings and philosophies that were infiltrating the Colossian church and to present Christ as the preeminent and all-sufficient Savior.

Prayer and Intercession:In Colossians 1:9, Paul mentions that he and his companions have been ceaselessly praying for the believers in Colossae. This shows us the importance of prayer and intercession for fellow believers. Paul’s dedication to praying for the spiritual well-being of others serves as an example for us to follow, emphasizing the significance of lifting one another up in prayer.

Filled with Knowledge:The primary desire of Paul’s prayer is that the Colossian believers may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. This knowledge refers to a deep understanding and comprehension of God’s purpose and plan. It involves knowing and discerning God’s desires, principles, and ways. Such knowledge comes through studying and meditating on God’s Word, as well as through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Wisdom and Spiritual Understanding:Paul prays that the Colossians may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will “in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Wisdom refers to the practical application of knowledge, the ability to discern and make sound decisions in accordance with God’s will. Spiritual understanding refers to insight and discernment given by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to grasp the deeper truths of God’s Word and apply them to their lives.

Implications for Believers:This verse highlights the importance of seeking God’s will and desiring to know Him more deeply. It encourages believers to prioritize prayer, interceding for one another’s spiritual growth. It also emphasizes the need for wisdom and spiritual understanding as we navigate the complexities of life and make decisions aligned with God’s Word.

Application:To apply Colossians 1:9 to our lives, we can make prayer a central part of our daily routine, not only for ourselves but also for our fellow believers. We should seek a deeper knowledge of God’s will by studying the Scriptures, relying on the Holy Spirit to grant us wisdom and spiritual understanding. By doing so, we can align our lives with God’s purposes, make wise choices, and grow in our relationship with Him.

  • In summary, Colossians 1:9 reminds us of the importance of prayer, seeking the knowledge of God’s will, and growing in wisdom and spiritual understanding. By incorporating these principles into our lives, we can deepen our relationship with God and align ourselves with His purposes.
