Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.”

Context:To understand Colossians 2:5 better, it’s important to look at the broader context of the book of Colossians. The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Colossae while he was in prison, addressing various theological and practical issues. In this particular verse, Paul expresses his joy and encouragement for the believers in Colossae, even though he was physically absent from them.

Absent in the flesh:Paul begins by acknowledging his physical absence from the Colossian believers. At the time of writing this letter, he was unable to be present with them due to his imprisonment. However, Paul wants the believers to know that his physical absence does not hinder his spiritual connection and concern for them.

With you in the spirit:Although Paul couldn’t be physically present, he assures the Colossian Christians that he is still with them in spirit. This indicates that Paul’s heart and thoughts were focused on them, and he was supporting them through prayer and spiritual unity. It reflects his deep care and commitment to the spiritual well-being of the Colossian church.

Joying and beholding your order:Paul expresses his joy upon hearing about the orderliness of the Colossian church. This implies that the church was functioning in an organised manner, following the teachings of the gospel and conducting themselves properly in the body of Christ. The orderliness and unity within the church would have been pleasing to Paul.

Steadfastness of your faith in Christ:Paul also commends the Colossian believers for their steadfast faith in Christ. Their faith had remained firm and unwavering despite challenges and temptations. This demonstrates the resilience and commitment of the Colossian Christians to their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Overall, Colossians 2:5 highlights Paul’s spiritual connection with the Colossian church, despite his physical absence. It emphasises the importance of unity, order, and steadfast faith in Christ within the community of believers. The verse also serves as an encouragement to Christians today, reminding us that our spiritual support and care for fellow believers can transcend physical boundaries.
