Colossians 3:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Colossians 3:9 (KJV) says, “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”

Historical Context:The book of Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae, a city in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Paul wrote this letter to address the issue of false teachings and to encourage the believers in Colossae to remain steadfast in their faith in Christ.

Putting off the Old Man:In Colossians 3:9, Paul encourages believers not to lie to one another. This instruction is given in the context of the new life that believers have in Christ. The “old man” refers to the person we were before we accepted Christ as our Savior. It represents our former way of life, characterised by sin and disobedience to God.

Honesty and Integrity:The command not to lie is an important aspect of living out the new life in Christ. As believers, we are called to be people of truth, honesty, and integrity. Lying goes against the nature of God and the values of His kingdom. We are called to imitate Christ, who is the embodiment of truth (John 14:6).

Relationships and Community:The instruction not to lie to one another emphasises the importance of healthy relationships within the body of Christ. Lies destroy trust and can lead to broken relationships. As believers, we are called to build up one another and foster an environment of trust and authenticity.

Renewed in Christ:The reason why we are to put off the old man and not lie to one another is that we have been made new in Christ. Through faith in Him, we have received forgiveness of sins and have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our old self has been crucified with Christ, and we are called to live in accordance with our new identity (Galatians 2:20).

Application:Colossians 3:9 challenges us to examine our lives and evaluate if we are being truthful and honest in our interactions with others. It reminds us to be people of integrity, both in our words and actions. We should strive to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and let our words be filled with grace (Colossians 4:6).

  • In conclusion: Colossians 3:9 emphasises the importance of living in truth and honesty, putting off our old way of life, and embracing the new life we have in Christ. Let us seek to be people of integrity, building healthy relationships and reflecting the character of Christ in all we do.
