Colossians 4:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.”

1. Context: It’s important to understand the context of the verse by looking at the surrounding verses and the overall theme of the book. Colossians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae. In this particular section (Colossians 4:2-6), Paul provides practical instructions for the believers’ conduct in their relationships, both within and outside the church.

2. Importance of Prayer: The verse begins with the instruction to “continue in prayer.” Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life. It is a means of communication with God, where we express our needs, concerns, and desires. Prayer is not a one-time event but an ongoing, consistent practice. Paul encourages the believers to maintain a steadfast devotion to prayer, emphasizing the importance of regular and persistent communication with God.

3. Watchfulness in Prayer: The verse also instructs believers to “watch in the same with thanksgiving.” This phrase highlights the attitude with which prayer should be approached-watchfulness and thanksgiving. To “watch” means to be vigilant, alert, and attentive in prayer. It implies being aware of God’s presence, actively seeking His will, and being sensitive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

4. Thanksgiving in Prayer: Alongside watchfulness, Paul emphasizes the importance of thanksgiving. Gratitude should accompany our prayers. Regardless of our circumstances, we should maintain a heart of gratitude toward God. Thanksgiving helps us shift our focus from our problems to the goodness and faithfulness of God. It reminds us of the countless blessings we have received and fosters an attitude of humility and contentment.

5. Application: The instruction given in this verse has practical implications for our daily lives as believers. It reminds us to prioritise prayer, not just as a routine, but as a genuine and ongoing conversation with God. It encourages us to be watchful, alert, and attentive to God’s leading and guidance in our lives. Furthermore, it reminds us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, offering thanks to God for His blessings and faithfulness.
