Colossians 4:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of a verse to grasp its full meaning. The book of Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae. In this particular verse, Paul is giving instructions on how believers should conduct themselves and interact with others.

“Let your speech be always with grace”:This phrase emphasises the importance of our speech and how we communicate with others. As Christians, we are called to speak graciously, displaying kindness, gentleness, and respect in our words. Our speech should reflect the grace that we have received from God through Jesus Christ.

“Seasoned with salt”:Salt was commonly used in the ancient world as a preservative and to enhance the flavour of food. In this context, being “seasoned with salt” means that our speech should be both flavourful and preserving. Our words should bring encouragement, wisdom, and truth to those who hear them. We should have a positive impact on others through our communication.

“That ye may know how ye ought to answer every man”:This part of the verse emphasises the importance of being prepared to give an appropriate response to everyone we encounter. As believers, we should be ready to give a well-thought-out and respectful answer when someone asks about our faith or challenges us. This requires wisdom, discernment, and knowledge of God’s Word so that we can respond effectively and share the truth in love.

Key Lessons:

  • Our speech matters:The way we speak and communicate with others is significant. It should reflect the grace of God and be characterised by kindness, love, and respect.
  • Positive impact:Our words should bring flavour and preservation to the lives of those around us. We should seek to encourage, uplift, and bless others through our speech.
  • Be prepared:We should be prepared to answer anyone who asks about our faith or presents questions or challenges. This requires studying and knowing God’s Word, cultivating wisdom, and relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance.

Application:

  • Monitor your speech:Reflect on your conversations and evaluate if your speech reflects God’s grace. Ask yourself if your words are uplifting and edifying to others.
  • Seek wisdom:Invest time in studying and understanding God’s Word. This will equip you to give appropriate and thoughtful responses when faced with questions or challenges about your faith.
  • Pray for guidance:Ask the Holy Spirit to help you season your speech with salt. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and the ability to speak in a way that honours God and positively impacts others.

By applying these principles from Colossians 4:6, we can become more effective witnesses for Christ and bring glory to God through our speech.
