Daniel 2:16

Listen to this article

Then Daniel went in and desired of the King, that hee would giue him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation. Daniel 2:16 (KJV)

The narrative of Daniel 2 records King Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream and his demand that the wise men not only interpret the dream but also disclose its content. The Babylonian counselors pleaded that no man could fulfill such a request, leading the king to decree that all the wise men of Babylon, including Daniel and his friends, would be put to death. In the midst of this crisis Daniel approached the king, asking for an audience and requesting time so that he might reveal both the dream and its interpretation.

Daniel’s boldness and faith are evident as he courageously seeks the king’s favor despite the perilous decree. He does not lose hope; instead, he places his confidence in God, recognizing that only the Lord can disclose the mystery of the dream. Rather than relying on his own wisdom, Daniel turns to God for guidance, acknowledging that divine revelation is essential. He also asks the king for time, demonstrating a desire to prepare accurately before presenting God’s message, while also trusting that God’s timing will provide the necessary insight.

God’s intervention is central to the account. It is God who reveals the dream and its meaning to Daniel, and Daniel responds by praising the sovereignty of the God he serves. This response models a proper attitude of gratitude and worship when God supplies wisdom and deliverance.

From this episode we draw several applications. First, we are called to trust God in challenging times, holding fast to the belief that He is in control even when circumstances appear hopeless. Second, we should seek God’s wisdom through prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel rather than depending solely on our own understanding. Third, preparation is important; before sharing God’s truth—whether in evangelism or everyday conversation—we ought to take time to ensure our message aligns with Scripture. Finally, like Daniel, we must give glory to God for the insight, guidance, and provision He provides.

Studying the entire chapter of Daniel 2 will reveal the full dream, its interpretation, and the broader demonstration of God’s wisdom and Daniel’s faithfulness, offering a richer understanding of this pivotal event in Daniel’s life.
