Daniel 2:26

Listen to this article

“The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?”

Daniel 2:26 (KJV):

This verse is part of the larger narrative found in Daniel chapter 2, where King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a troubling dream but could not remember it. The king demanded his magicians, sorcerers, and wise men to not only interpret the dream but also tell him what the dream itself was. When they failed, the king ordered the execution of all the wise men, including Daniel and his three friends (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego).

In Daniel 2:26, we see the king addressing Daniel, who was given the Babylonian name Belteshazzar. The king asked Daniel if he was able to make known the dream and its interpretation. This request highlights the desperation of King Nebuchadnezzar to understand his dream and the urgency he felt in finding someone who could reveal it to him.

This verse sets the stage for Daniel’s remarkable response, where he acknowledges that no mere human can reveal the dream and its meaning. Instead, he attributes the ability to do so to God alone. Daniel goes on to recount how he sought God’s revelation through prayer, and God graciously answered by revealing both the dream and its interpretation to him.

Human Limitations:The inability of the magicians, sorcerers, and wise men to fulfil the king’s request demonstrates the limitations of human wisdom and power. It reminds us that there are situations beyond our control and understanding, where we need to rely on a higher power.

God’s Sovereignty:Daniel’s response highlights his acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty. He recognises that God is the source of true wisdom and understanding. It emphasises the importance of seeking God’s guidance and revelation in times of uncertainty.

Prayer and Dependence on God:Daniel’s immediate response to the king’s request was to seek God through prayer. His actions demonstrate the significance of relying on God and seeking His guidance in challenging circumstances. Daniel’s prayer and subsequent receiving of the dream’s interpretation serve as a model for us to approach God in times of need.

God’s Faithfulness:The fact that God revealed the dream and its meaning to Daniel showcases His faithfulness. Even in the face of a seemingly impossible task, God provided the knowledge and understanding necessary to fulfil His purposes. This gives us confidence that God is able to guide and direct us when we trust in Him.
