Daniel 2:34

Listen to this article

“Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.”

Context:Daniel 2:34 is a part of the vision that God gave to Daniel, who was a prophet in the Old Testament. In this chapter, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a dream, and he called his wise men to interpret it. However, he demanded that they first tell him the dream itself, which they found impossible. This made the king angry, and he ordered the execution of all the wise men, including Daniel and his friends.

Daniel prayed to God, and God revealed both the dream and its interpretation to him in a vision. Daniel then praised God and thanked Him for His wisdom and understanding. Daniel went to the king and told him that there was a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he could reveal the dream and its interpretation.

Now, let’s focus specifically on Daniel 2:34:

In the dream, King Nebuchadnezzar saw a large image with a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, legs of iron, and feet partly of iron and partly of clay. The stone cut out without hands represents a supernatural intervention from God.

When the stone struck the image on its feet, the entire image crumbled and became like chaff or dust, which the wind carried away. The different parts of the image represented various kingdoms throughout history, starting with Babylon (the head of gold) and followed by subsequent empires.

The stone represents the kingdom of God or the Messianic Kingdom, which will be established in the future. This kingdom will destroy all human kingdoms and will reign forever. The image’s destruction signifies the final and ultimate victory of God’s kingdom over all earthly powers.

Daniel 2:34 illustrates the sovereignty and power of God over the affairs of nations and human history. It emphasizes that God’s kingdom will ultimately triumph over all human kingdoms, and His rule will be established forever.

This verse also foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the "cornerstone" in the New Testament. Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders but has become the chief cornerstone of God’s spiritual kingdom (Matthew 21:42). Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus established a new kingdom, the kingdom of God, which continues to expand throughout history.

In summary, Daniel 2:34 reveals God’s plan to establish His everlasting kingdom, which will eventually destroy all earthly kingdoms. It points to the fulfillment found in Jesus Christ, who is the cornerstone of God’s spiritual kingdom.
