Daniel 2:7
They answered againe, and said, Let the King tell his seruants the dreame, and we will shew the interpretation of it. Daniel 2:7 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the dramatic narrative of King Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream and its eventual interpretation by Daniel. In Daniel 2 the Babylonian king summons his magicians, sorcerers, astrologers, and other wise men, demanding not only the interpretation of his dream but also a full revelation of the dream itself. The king, however, refuses to disclose the content of the dream, insisting that the counselors must first tell him both the dream and its meaning. The counselors are therefore forced to respond in the words of verse 7, pleading that the king must first relate the dream so that they might be able to show its interpretation. Their reply underscores their inability to meet the king’s impossible demand and reveals their frustration and helplessness.
The passage highlights two important realities. First, it exposes the limits of human wisdom; the Chaldeans acknowledge that no one among them can produce an interpretation without the dream’s details. Second, it sets the stage for Daniel’s entrance into the story. Unlike the other counselors, Daniel possesses a unique connection with God, enabling him to receive the dream and its meaning directly from the Divine. When Daniel learns of the king’s decree, he seeks an audience with Nebuchadnezzar through Arioch, the captain of the guard. By God’s mercy Daniel is granted the opportunity to present both the dream and its interpretation, thereby saving his own life and the lives of the other wise men.
The significance of Daniel 2:7 lies in its illustration of human dependence on divine revelation. The counselors’ desperate plea points to the necessity of God’s sovereign wisdom, a theme that Daniel later embodies when he confidently declares that the interpretation will be given by God, not by human skill. Through this verse the narrative emphasizes God’s sovereignty, His provision of revelation to those who trust Him, and the contrast between human limitation and divine empowerment. In conclusion, Daniel 2:7 records the wise men’s helplessness and foreshadows Daniel’s divine empowerment, which leads to the revelation and interpretation of the king’s dream—a pivotal event that shapes the subsequent history recorded in the book of Daniel.
