Daniel 5:23

“But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified”

This verse contains Daniel’s rebuke to King Belshazzar for his arrogance and disrespect towards the Lord. To better understand the context of this verse, let’s briefly look at the preceding events.

In Daniel 5, we read about a lavish feast organized by King Belshazzar. During the feast, the king commanded that the gold and silver vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem be brought, so that he and his nobles, wives, and concubines could drink from them and praise their own gods made of various materials.

This act of using the sacred vessels from the temple to worship false gods and idols was a direct affront to the God of Israel. In response to this sacrilege, a supernatural occurrence took place: a hand appeared and wrote mysterious words on the wall of the banquet hall.

The king, terrified and unable to interpret the writing, called for his wise men, astrologers, and diviners to interpret the message but they were unsuccessful. At the urging of the queen mother, Daniel was called upon to interpret the writing.

Before delivering the interpretation, Daniel reminded the king of his father Nebuchadnezzar’s experiences and how he had failed to humble himself before God. Daniel then accuses Belshazzar of lifting himself up against the Lord of heaven. He highlights the king’s misuse of the sacred vessels and his worship of false gods made of lifeless materials, emphasizing that these gods cannot see, hear, or know anything.

Daniel concludes by pointing out that it is the God of heaven, in whose hand the king’s very breath and life are held, who deserves all glory and honor. Daniel makes it clear that King Belshazzar had failed to acknowledge and glorify the true God.

The message of this verse serves as a warning against pride, arrogance, and idolatry. It teaches us the importance of acknowledging God’s sovereignty, giving Him the honor and reverence that He deserves, and recognizing that all our ways are ultimately in His hands.

Overall, Daniel 5:23 emphasizes the contrast between the powerlessness of idols and the greatness of the living God, and reminds us to honor and glorify Him in all our ways.
