Daniel 5:30
In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Caldeans slaine. Daniel 5:30 (KJV)
This verse is part of the account of Belshazzar’s feast in the book of Daniel. Belshazzar was one of the final kings of Babylon, and the event takes place during the Babylonian captivity of the Israelites. In this chapter Belshazzar hosted a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine with them. During the feast he commanded that the golden and silver vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem be brought so that they could drink from them. As they praised their gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, a supernatural hand appeared and began writing on the wall of the king’s palace.
The king was troubled and called for his wise men to interpret the writing, but none could understand it. The queen reminded the king about Daniel, a man who had interpreted dreams and shown great wisdom during the reign of his father Nebuchadnezzar. Belshazzar called for Daniel, who came and interpreted the writing. Daniel explained the words “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin,” meaning that Belshazzar’s kingdom had been weighed, found wanting, and would be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. This was a message of judgment from God, foretelling the imminent fall of Babylon and the end of Belshazzar’s reign.
Following the interpretation the Bible tells us that on that very night Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain. The Medes and Persians invaded the city of Babylon, took control of it, and the kingdom was transferred to the Medo‑Persian empire; Darius the Median took the kingdom. The verse highlights the righteous judgment of God. Belshazzar had shown disrespect for the holy vessels of the Lord and worshiped false gods, which led to his downfall. It serves as a reminder that God is sovereign and holds all nations accountable for their actions.
The passage also showcases the faithfulness of Daniel as a servant of God. Despite being surrounded by a pagan culture he remained devoted to the Lord and continued to proclaim His message of judgment. Daniel’s obedience to God’s calling and his unwavering faith inspire believers to remain faithful in all circumstances.
Overall Daniel 5:30 teaches the importance of honoring God and the consequences of disregarding His commandments. No kingdom or ruler can escape the judgment of God when they oppose His will. Therefore believers are called to examine their own hearts and ensure that they do not treat God’s holy things lightly, but instead live under His authority with reverence.
