Daniel 7:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them.”

Context:Daniel 7 is a chapter that records Daniel’s vision of four great beasts emerging from the sea, representing powerful earthly kingdoms. In the vision, Daniel sees a little horn rising among the ten horns of the fourth beast, which symbolises a future ruler who would persecute God’s people.

Symbolic Interpretation:In this verse, the “horn” represents a powerful ruler or kingdom. The horn in Daniel’s vision represents a specific ruler who would wage war against the “saints,” referring to God’s people or the faithful followers of God.

Persecution of the Saints:The verse states that this horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them. This indicates that the ruler represented by the horn would oppress and persecute God’s people, causing them to suffer and face difficulties. It suggests a time of intense opposition to the people of God.

Prevailing Against the Saints:The phrase “prevailed against them” implies that the persecution would be severe and that the ruler would have a temporary upper hand. However, it is essential to note that this verse doesn’t provide the final outcome. The subsequent verses in Daniel 7 describe the judgment and ultimate defeat of the oppressive ruler by the Ancient of Days (God).

Historical and Prophetic Application:Scholars and theologians have different interpretations regarding the identity of the little horn and the historical fulfilment of this prophecy. Some see it as referring to a specific historical figure such as Antiochus IV Epiphanes or a future end-time ruler. Others view it as a symbolic representation of oppressive powers throughout history.

  • Encouragement for the Faithful:While this verse describes a time of persecution and temporary victory for the oppressor, the overall message of the book of Daniel offers encouragement to the faithful. Daniel’s visions reveal that ultimately, God’s sovereignty will prevail, and the oppressors will be judged. The book emphasises the importance of remaining steadfast in faith and trusting in God’s ultimate deliverance.

Remember that the Bible contains multiple layers of meaning and can be interpreted in various ways. It is beneficial to consult different commentaries, study resources, and trusted religious leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
