Daniel 9:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.”

Context:At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Daniel 9:23 (KJV)

This verse is part of the larger context of Daniel’s prayer and the angelic response he receives. To better understand Daniel 9:23, let’s explore the surrounding verses and the historical context.

In Daniel 9, the prophet Daniel is studying the prophecies of Jeremiah and realizes that the time of captivity in Babylon, as foretold by Jeremiah, is coming to an end. He confesses the sins of his people and pleads for God’s mercy and restoration of Jerusalem and the temple.

In verse 20, Daniel begins his prayer, and while he is still praying and confessing his sins and the sins of his people, the angel Gabriel appears to him. It is at this point that we encounter Daniel 9:23.

“At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth”: This portion indicates that as soon as Daniel began to pray, God issued a command or decree in response to his supplications. Daniel’s prayers had a swift and significant impact in the spiritual realm, prompting divine intervention.

“And I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved”: Gabriel informs Daniel that he has come to provide understanding and insight. This expression of Daniel being greatly beloved reveals God’s favour and love towards him. Daniel’s character and faithfulness had made a deep impression on God.

“Therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision”: Gabriel urges Daniel to pay close attention and comprehend the prophetic message that follows. The vision and the subsequent interpretation hold important information about the future and the fulfilment of God’s plans.
