Deuteronomy 10:2

Listen to this article

And I will write on the Tables the words that were in the first Tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the Arke. Deuteronomy 10:2 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a larger passage in Deuteronomy where Moses recounts the events that followed the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. Before turning to Deuteronomy 10:2, it is helpful to recall the background given in the previous chapter (Deuteronomy 9). There Moses reminds the people of their rebelliousness and the golden‑calf incident, noting that the Israelites turned away from God and worshiped a false idol. In response to that disobedience Moses broke the original tablets of the Ten Commandments, which had been inscribed with God’s law.

In Deuteronomy 10:2 God instructs Moses to prepare new tablets, and He writes on them the same words that were on the first tablets. These new tablets are to be placed inside the ark of the covenant, the sacred container that housed the Ten Commandments and symbolized God’s presence among His people.

Key themes emerge from this passage. First, obedience and covenant fidelity are highlighted: despite the Israelites’ earlier disobedience and the breaking of the original tablets, God offers them another opportunity to receive His commandments, demonstrating mercy and a willingness to renew the covenant. Second, God’s faithfulness is evident; even when the people falter, He remains true to His promises, extending grace and reaffirming His commitment to guide and protect them. Third, the ark of the covenant serves as the central symbol of God’s presence; placing the rewritten tablets within it signifies the continued authority, guidance, and nearness of God to His people. Finally, the act of rewriting the commandments points to restoration and redemption, foreshadowing the redemptive plan fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who would later bring forgiveness for sin.

Application follows naturally. The renewal of the tablets reminds believers that God is a God of grace and mercy, offering second chances and inviting repentance and renewal. As the commandments were central to Israel’s relationship with God, Christians are likewise called to live in obedience to God’s Word as revealed in Scripture. The ark’s symbolism assures believers that God’s presence and guidance remain available today; we can trust His faithfulness and rely on Him in every aspect of life. Moreover, the rewriting of the law anticipates the restoration offered through Christ, granting forgiveness, restored relationship with God, and the hope of eternal life.

In summary, Deuteronomy 10:2 underscores God’s faithfulness, His willingness to grant second chances, and the importance of obedience and covenant fidelity. It reminds us of God’s continual presence, guidance, and the redemptive work accomplished in Christ. May we seek to obey God’s Word, find comfort in His abiding presence, and embrace the restoration He offers through Jesus Christ.
