Listen to this article

“And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah. It contains the final instructions of Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. The verse in question is part of Moses’ reminder to the people of God’s faithfulness and His mighty acts in delivering them from Egypt and leading them through the wilderness.

Historical Background:The verse recalls the event of the crossing of the Red Sea. The Israelites, led by Moses, had just been freed from slavery in Egypt and were being pursued by Pharaoh and his army. As they approached the Red Sea, God miraculously parted the waters, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground. When Pharaoh and his army pursued them into the sea, God caused the waters to return, drowning the Egyptians and destroying their army.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse highlights God’s sovereignty and power over nature. It emphasizes how God defeated the mighty army of Egypt, including their horses and chariots, through a miraculous act. It serves as a reminder to the Israelites of God’s ability to protect and deliver them from their enemies.

Faithfulness and Deliverance:Deuteronomy 11:4 also emphasises God’s faithfulness to His covenant people. Despite the Israelites’ initial fear and doubt when they faced the Red Sea, God intervened and demonstrated His power on their behalf. This event serves as a powerful reminder to the Israelites and to us today that God is faithful to His promises and is capable of delivering us from any situation.

Application:As believers today, we can draw several lessons from Deuteronomy 11:4. It reminds us to trust in God’s sovereignty and power, knowing that He is in control of every situation. We can take comfort in His faithfulness, knowing that He will deliver us from our enemies and provide a way when there seems to be no way. It also encourages us to remember and reflect on God’s past acts of deliverance in our lives, which can strengthen our faith and give us hope in difficult times.

In summary, Deuteronomy 11:4 recounts the miraculous event of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from the pursuing Egyptian army at the Red Sea. It serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, and His power to deliver His people. It encourages us to trust in God’s ability to protect and provide for us in all circumstances.
