Deuteronomy 13:3

Posted on 4 July 2024
Listen to this article

Thou shalt not hearken vnto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreames: for the Lord your God prooueth you, to know whether you loue the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soule. Deuteronomy 13:3 (KJV)

Context: Deuteronomy is the fifth book of Moses, forming part of the Torah. It records Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. Chapter 13 deals specifically with the danger of false prophets and the necessity of exclusive fidelity to the LORD.

Warning against false prophets: In this verse Moses warns the people not to listen to a prophet or a dreamer of dreams who urges them to follow other gods or to worship in ways contrary to the covenant. The purpose of the warning is to protect the community from idolatry and to preserve covenant fidelity.

Testing faith and loyalty: The passage explains that the LORD tests His people through such deceptive voices so that their true love may be revealed. Genuine love for God is shown by unwavering loyalty and obedience to His commandments, even when faced with alluring false teachings. The test serves to purify hearts and confirm commitment.

Identifying false prophets: While the verse itself does not list criteria for spotting false prophets, it encourages continual discernment. Scripture elsewhere—such as Jesus’ warning that false prophets come in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves (Matt. 7:15)—provides further guidance. Believers are urged to study the Word, be led by the Holy Spirit, and compare any teaching against biblical truth.

Application to believers today: Though addressed to Israel in its covenant context, the principle remains relevant. Christians are called to vigilance, ensuring that every teaching aligns with God’s revealed Word. Wholehearted devotion requires loving the Lord with all heart and soul and obeying His commandments faithfully.

God’s faithfulness and protection: Despite the presence of deceptive voices, the LORD remains faithful to His people. He promises to be with those who remain steadfast, offering guidance and protection. Believers can take comfort that God will not allow them to be led astray if they cling to Him.

For deeper insight, consult reliable commentaries and teaching resources to understand Deuteronomy 13 within its broader biblical context and to apply its timeless truth to contemporary faith.
