Deuteronomy 18:12

Listen to this article

For all that do these things, are an abomination vnto the Lord: and because of these abominations, the Lord thy God doth driue them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18:12 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage in Deuteronomy where God is instructing the Israelites about the dangers of pagan practices and the importance of remaining faithful to Him. The preceding verses in Deuteronomy 18 (verses 9‑11) mention specific practices that are considered abominable in the sight of God: sorcery, divination, witchcraft, interpreting omens, casting spells, consulting the dead, and practicing necromancy. God strictly forbids the Israelites from participating in such activities.

The verse emphasizes that those who engage in these abominable practices are detestable to the Lord. The term “abomination” is used in Scripture to describe things that are utterly detestable to God, often associated with idolatry and immorality. While Deuteronomy 18:12 itself does not state that the Lord will drive out the nations practicing such abominations, other passages (e.g., Deuteronomy 7) speak of God driving out hostile peoples from the Promised Land. This demonstrates God’s desire for His people to remain pure and separate from the practices of the surrounding nations.

God’s holiness is a central theme throughout the Bible. He desires His people to reflect His character and live in accordance with His commands. By warning against these abominations, God demonstrates His faithfulness to the Israelites, guiding them away from practices that can lead to spiritual corruption and separation from Him.

A call to trust and obey runs through the passage. The Israelites are reminded of the importance of trusting God’s wisdom and guidance, even when cultural practices seem enticing. Likewise, believers today are urged to avoid sinful practices associated with idolatry, occultism, and any actions that go against God’s commands.

Pursuing holiness means striving to live in a way that honors God and brings glory to His name, following the moral and ethical guidelines provided in Scripture. When faced with cultural pressures or temptations, believers must rely on God’s guidance, allowing His instructions to protect and lead them into a life pleasing to Him.

Faithfulness to God involves resisting the pull of worldly practices and remaining committed to a relationship with Him, seeking Him wholeheartedly and putting Him first. In conclusion, Deuterine 18:12 highlights the importance of avoiding abominable practices and remaining faithful to God’s commands, reminding us of the need for obedience, trust, and holiness in our relationship with God.
