Listen to this article

Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat, and yee shall also buy water of them for money, that yee may drinke. Deuteronomy 2:6 (KJV)

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is traditionally attributed to Moses. It contains a series of speeches given by Moses to the Israelites just before they entered the Promised Land. In these speeches, Moses reminded the Israelites of God’s laws and instructions, recounted their history, and urged them to remain faithful to God.

Deuteronomy 2:6 is part of Moses’ recounting of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Here, Moses recalls how God had instructed the Israelites to pass through the territory of Edom (the descendants of Esau). The instruction was to pass through the land without provoking the inhabitants, allowing the Israelites to move on peacefully rather than engaging in conflict. In this land, the Israelites were not to provoke the people or engage in war with them. Instead, they were permitted to buy food and water from them with money.

God’s Instructions: This verse highlights God’s specific instructions to the Israelites as they journeyed through foreign lands. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the need to respect the rights and boundaries of other nations. This verse highlights God’s specific direction for the Israelites as they journeyed through foreign lands, emphasizing obedience to divine commands and respect for the boundaries set by other nations.

Peaceful Coexistence: God instructed the Israelites to seek peaceful interaction with the inhabitants of the lands they passed through. Instead of resorting to conflict or seizing resources forcefully, they were allowed to buy food and water from these nations. Rather than initiating hostilities, they were to move through the territory calmly, trusting that the neighboring peoples would be fearful of them as God had warned. This teaches us the value of peaceful coexistence and respecting the property and rights of others.

Trusting in God’s Provision: Although the Israelites were permitted to purchase food and water, it is crucial to remember that God was their ultimate provider. This verse reminds us that even in unfamiliar territories, God was with the Israelites, guiding them and ensuring their needs were met. While the Israelites were to travel through these regions without taking hostile action, the broader narrative reminds believers that God remains the ultimate provider, guiding and sustaining His people even in unfamiliar territories. It encourages us to trust in God’s provision and guidance in our own lives.

Responsibility and Stewardship: The Israelites were required to use their resources (money) to sustain themselves while respecting the resources of the nations they encountered. This verse implies a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the blessings and provisions God grants us. The passage calls for responsible conduct—honoring God’s commands while respecting the rights and property of other nations. It teaches us to use our resources wisely, both for our own sustenance and to contribute positively to the world around us.

Application:

Peaceful Relationships: We should seek peaceful relationships with others, even when we encounter differences. Strive for peaceful and respectful relationships, even when differences arise, avoiding unnecessary conflict. Instead of instigating conflict or harboring ill will, we can aim for understanding and cooperation.

Respectful Stewardship: As believers, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. Use personal resources wisely and honor the rights and property of others, reflecting responsible stewardship.

Trusting in God’s Guidance: In times of uncertainty or when facing unfamiliar situations, we can rely on God’s guidance and provision. In uncertain or new situations, rely on God’s direction and provision, confident that He accompanies us on our life’s journey.

Obedience to Divine Guidance: This verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. Recognize the importance of following God’s instructions, which can lead to harmony, safety, and blessings.

Remember, the Bible offers many valuable lessons for daily living. Through prayer, reflection, and continued study, we can deepen our understanding of God’s Word and apply its wisdom in our everyday walk with Him.
