Deuteronomy 22:21

Posted on 13 August 2024
Listen to this article

Then they shall bring out the damosell to the doore of her fathers house, and the men of her city shal stone her with stones that she die, because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her fathers house: so shalt thou put euill away from among you. Deuteronomy 22:21 (KJV)

Deuteronomy belongs to the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to Moses. It records laws and instructions given to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land, reflecting the social and religious priorities of that ancient community.

In this passage the “damsel” is a young woman who was betrothed and presumed to be a virgin. If she is found not to be a virgin at the time of the marriage covenant, the community is commanded to bring her out to the doorway of her father’s house and stone her to death. The penalty is presented as a means of removing what was perceived as a threat to the purity of the people.

The verse underscores the importance placed on holiness and purity within the Israelite community. Sexual immorality, especially premarital loss of virginity, was regarded as a grave violation of the sanctity of marriage and of the covenant relationship between God and Israel. By prescribing a severe punishment, the law aimed to demonstrate the community’s commitment to living in obedience to God’s standards.

Stoning, though harsh by modern standards, functioned as a public deterrent against behavior deemed destructive to the social and religious order. The involvement of the entire city in carrying out the execution reflects a collective responsibility for upholding moral standards and for keeping evil away from among the people.

Within the covenant framework, sexual unfaithfulness symbolized spiritual unfaithfulness and idolatry. Just as God demanded loyalty from His people, the Israelites were expected to demonstrate fidelity within their marriages and relationships, viewing marital faithfulness as integral to honoring the covenant.

When the passage is read in light of the New Testament, the teachings of Jesus on mercy, forgiveness, and restoration become central. Jesus’ compassion toward the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1‑11) illustrates a shift from legalistic judgment to heart‑change, inviting believers to apply the underlying concern for relational fidelity through the transformative work of the Holy Spirit rather than through ancient punitive measures.

In summary, Deuteronomy 22:21 addresses the case of a betrothed virgin who is discovered not to be a virgin after marriage and prescribes communal stoning as a severe response. The text highlights ancient concerns for holiness, justice, and covenant faithfulness, while contemporary readers are called to discern the principle of fidelity and to embody the New Testament message of mercy and redemption.
