Listen to this article

Thou hast auouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walke in his wayes, and to keepe his Statutes, and his Commaundements, and his Iudgements, and to hearken vnto his voice. Deuteronomy 26:17 (KJV)

This verse is part of the covenant renewal ceremony recorded in Deuteronomy 27, not Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. It highlights the commitment that the people were making to God as they reaffirmed their covenant relationship with Him.

The verse begins with the phrase “Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God.” This statement reflects the Israelites’ acknowledgment of God’s covenant with them. By choosing the Lord as their God, they were affirming their commitment to follow and serve Him.

The verse continues by emphasizing the Israelites’ pledge to walk in God’s ways. This phrase denotes a life of obedience, aligning their thoughts, actions, and decisions with the principles and teachings of God.

The Israelites committed themselves to observe and uphold God’s statutes, commandments, and judgments. These refer to the various laws and regulations given by God to guide their moral, ethical, and religious conduct. It includes the Ten Commandments and the other laws outlined in the book of Exodus and Leviticus.

The verse concludes by mentioning the importance of hearkening, or listening, to God’s voice. This emphasizes the necessity of having an attentive and responsive attitude towards God’s instructions and guidance.

In summary, Deuteronomy 26:17 serves as a reminder of the Israelites’ covenant with God and their commitment to follow Him wholeheartedly. It highlights the importance of walking in God’s ways, keeping His commandments, and heeding His voice. This verse holds significance not only for the ancient Israelites but also for believers today, as it encourages us to live a life of faithfulness and obedience to God’s Word.
