Deuteronomy 28:2

Listen to this article

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and ouertake thee, if thou shalt hearken vnto the voice of the Lord thy God. Deuteronomy 28:2 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger passage known as the Blessings and Curses in Deuteronomy 28. In it Moses addresses the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land, reminding them of the covenant God made with them and outlining the consequences of obedience and disobedience.

The book of Deuteronomy records Moses’ farewell address to the people. He reviews their history, reiterates God’s law, and urges them to obey the commandments as they prepare to possess the land that God promised to their ancestors.

Deuteronomy 28 opens with a detailed list of blessings that will come upon the nation if they obey God’s voice. These blessings cover every sphere of life—prosperity in the fields, fertility in families, victory over enemies, and the outpouring of divine favor.

The key condition for receiving these blessings is emphasized in verse 2: the blessings will come and overtake the people only if they “hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.” To hearken means to listen attentively, obey, and follow God’s instructions, making obedience the essential prerequisite for divine favor.

The verse also reveals that the blessings are intimately tied to the Israelites’ relationship with God. By hearkening to His voice they demonstrate trust, faithfulness, and submission, highlighting that a personal, obedient relationship with God is the foundation for experiencing His blessings.

While the original audience was Israel, the principle applies to believers today. Our obedience to God’s Word remains essential for experiencing His blessings and favor. When we listen attentively to God through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and our ongoing relationship with Him, we position ourselves to receive the abundant blessings He promises.

In the New Testament, Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law, and we are justified by faith in Him. Nevertheless, obedience continues to be a vital aspect of the Christian life. As Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Our love for God is demonstrated through obedience to His teachings and living according to His Word.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 28:2 underscores the direct correlation between obedience to God’s voice and the blessings that follow. Just as the Israelites were called to hearken to the Lord, we too are encouraged to listen, obey, and follow God’s Word. Through faithfulness and obedience, we position ourselves to receive His abundant blessings, both in this life and in eternity.
