Deuteronomy 28:68

Listen to this article

And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt againe, with ships, by the way whereof I spake vnto thee, Thou shalt see it no more againe: and there ye shall bee sold vnto your enemies for bondmen, and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you. Deuteronomy 28:68 (KJV)

Context: Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, traditionally attributed to Moses. It contains the laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land.

Covenant Blessings and Curses: Deuteronomy 28 outlines the blessings that would come upon the Israelites if they obeyed God’s commandments and the curses that would befall them if they turned away from His laws. Verse 68 falls within the section discussing the severe consequences of disobedience.

Historical Application: In a historical context, the verse refers to the consequences that would befall the Israelites if they failed to obey God’s commands. The mention of being brought into Egypt again with ships aludes to the Israelites being taken into captivity by foreign nations, experiencing bondage and slavery.

Fulfillment: This verse has been interpreted in various ways historically. Some events, such as the flight of some Jews to Egypt after Gedaliah’s assassination (Jeremiah 43:5–7), reflect aspects of this prophecy, though the full scope of its fulfillment remains complex. From a broader historical perspective, the Babylonian captivity, when Judah was taken into exile in Babylon after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, is also seen as a fulfillment of the warning.

Symbolic Meaning: Beyond its historical application, Egypt often represents bondage or slavery in biblical symbolism. The reference to being brought into Egypt again can be understood as a metaphor for the Israelites experiencing oppression, captivity, or exile because of their disobedience.

Spiritual Application: As believers today, we can draw lessons from Deuteronomy 28:68. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God’s commands and the importance of obedience. While we may not experience the exact circumstances described, the passage highlights the need to remain faithful and obedient to God, lest we face negative consequences of straying from His ways.

Redemption and Hope: Although this verse speaks of dire consequences, it is crucial to remember that God’s ultimate plan includes redemption and restoration. Throughout Scripture we see God’s faithfulness in delivering His people from captivity and bringing them back to a place of blessing when they repent and turn to Him. Approaching this verse with careful consideration of its historical context, literary genre, and theological implications, and consulting trusted biblical scholars and commentaries, can provide deeper insight into its meaning and application.
